BIOGRAPHY

Matthew Malanowski is currently a jazz pianist studying jazz piano performance at the Manhattan School of Music in New York, NY. He has been playing piano since the age of 4 and comes from a very musical background. Matt has had the opportunity to learn from many great musicians throughout New York and Connecticut and is currently studying jazz with Garry Dial and classical with Lisa Yui of Manhattan School of Music. Matt has performed at prestigious venues such as Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, the Appel Room, the Grammy Awards, Capital Records, Martha’s Vineyard Jazz and Blues Festival, the Met Room, Club Bonafide, Webster Hall, Shapeshifter Lab, Carnegie Hall, Faust Harrison Pianos, as well as many others. Matt has played with many well known musicians including Matt Wilson, Avery Sharpe, Conrad Herwig, Nilson Matta, Jazzmeia Horn, Jane Monheit, Lou Tebakin, Luis Bonilla, Jimmy Greene, NY Voices, Jon Faddis and many more.

Matt began studying piano with Nancy Deutsch in Massapequa Park, NY. He then went on to study jazz piano with Don Stein in West Hempstead, NY before being accepted to Manhattan School of Music Pre-College where he began working with Garry Dial.  While still in high school, Matt played in the 2012 NYSSMA All State Piano Showcase and 2012/13 NYSSMA All State Jazz Ensemble in Rochester, NY.  He was also selected as the 2013 All National Jazz Ensemble Pianist in Nashville, TN. Matt was selected as one of only two pianists nationwide for the 2013 High School Grammy Jazz Camp Jazz Band in Los Angeles, CA under the direction of Justin DiCioccio of Manhattan School of Music.  While in the Grammy Band, Matt performed with Arturo Sandoval.  While studying at Manhattan School of Music Pre-College, Matt participated in the 2014 Mingus Competition where he was named Outstanding Soloist and Winner of the small combo category with his MSM jazz combo under the direction of Felipe Salles.  Matt performed with the Mingus Band at the Jazz Standard in 2014 as a result.  In 2015, Matt was a National Young Arts Foundation Honorable Mention winner in Jazz/Jazz Keyboard in NY, NY.  Matt has been the pianist for the New York Youth Symphony Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Matt Holman from 2014-2016.  With this group he has toured in Brazil, played with some of the great musicians mentioned above and won the Director’s Choice Award in 2016.  Matt has been accepted on scholarship to the prestigious Banff Center Jazz Workshop in Alberta, Canada for August, 2016.  He also will be going on tour in Japan this September with the Petra Jarrar Band.  Matt has been commissioned by world-renowned jazz clarinetist Rick Bogart to co-write his second Jazz Concerto for Clarinet and Symphony Orchestra. This piece will be recorded for Arabesque Records and premiered by the end of 2016.
